What is yoga?
Yoga is an ancient Indian discipline developed
to integrate mind, body, and spirit. It has the ultimate
aim of bringing into union the individual soul with
the universal spirit.
Will yoga
conflict with my religious beliefs?
No. Working to unify mind, body, and spirit will only
support and enhance what you already believe.
What books
do you recommend?
How to Use Yoga by Mira Mehta is a good introductory
book.
Yoga the Iyengar Way by Silva, Mira &
Shyam Mehta is another terrific book for beginners.
Light on Yoga by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar
Yoga: A Gem for Women by Geeta Iyengar
What can I
expect in a yoga class?
You can expect an hour to ninety-minute session in
which you will be introduced to a wide variety of
poses. Some poses are done while standing, some sitting,
lying down and, over time, upside-down. Your instructor
will teach you how to use props such as blankets,
blocks and belts that help you work on a pose to the
best of your ability. Poses have many different benefits,
including improving strength, muscle tone, flexibility
and alignment. Yoga reduces tiredness, calms nerves,
disciplines the mind, and is a great stress reducer.
What do I
do to start? Do I need to pre-register?
You do not need to pre-register for any of our regularly
scheduled classes. Just show up ten minutes prior,
fill out a waiver and talk to the instructor about
any specific needs or concerns. People who have not
done yoga before should start with an intro series.
New students may jump into a beginning class, but
they are on-going and will not be introductory in
nature.
What should
I wear or bring?
Wear loose fitting clothing. Most people wear shorts
or leggings and a t-shirt. Yoga is always practiced
in bare feet. While our studio is equipped with yoga
props, we do recommend students bring their own mats
if possible. Please do not eat a FULL MEAL for two
hours before class and make sure to tell your instructor
of any health issues or if you are menstruating.
How often
should I come to class?
That depends on your schedule. We find that if you
are coming less than once a week, you receive significantly
less benefit. Yoga rewards consistent, hard work.
That being said, we do not recommend beginning by
coming every day either. The rule of thumb is to listen
to the feedback that your body is giving you.
Can I come
to class while menstruating?
Yes, but it is important to inform your instructor.
There are certain poses that are not suitable during
this time and the instructor may give you some alternative
poses during the class.
Can I come
to class if I have physical limitations?
We offer both a Gentle and a Restful class taught
by a licensed physical therapist for those that are
looking to release stress and ease pain, but are concerned
with the demands of a regular yoga class. If you do
have specific issues, you must tell the instructor
before taking ANY class. Depending on the teacher,
they may not feel comfortable with your particular
limitations--know that this is for your benefit. We
also recommend you receive medical clearance from
your doctor.
Can I come
to class if I am pregnant?
If you do not have prior yoga experience, our Intro
Series or Gentle class would be best for you. Before
taking any class, make sure you inform the instructor
of your condition.
Can children
take yoga classes?
Yes, we offer classes specifically designed for children
ages 6-12 and teens. We also offer Family Yoga each
month as a specialty class for everyone in the family
over 5 years of age. Julie Queenan is our Coordinator
of Family Programs and is a certified children’s
teacher.
